MAGIC

I first heard about the award winning sensory classes online whilst I was searching for baby classes for my newborn.  Whilst I was searching for classes I assumed as bubba was so young I would most probably only find a class that was more along the lines of a social tea morning for new mums to meet and babies to socialise.  As much as this is fine and gets mum and baby out the house I am glad I came across Baby Sensory as it is important to help baby with all their seneses from a young age and encourage them to remember items, routines, sounds, lights and the list goes on.  This is a perfect class for mums to socialise and meet other mums and for babies to meet other babies and I would highly reccomend this class which is also available in terms/courses.   Not only is it a lovely way to meet new people and educate the babies fom a young age but it is also infromative for the parents.  With each week focusing on a different theme there is always something new to learn.  I will be writing a weekly blog on my experience to encourage as many mums as possible to join the group as it really is worth the trip to the class and the bubbas love it.

This weeks class was focussing on Magic.

Before I begin just a reminder that you can purchase some of the props and music from the Baby Sensory.  I will add a link to the bottom of this blog.

This week we started the class with the weekly 'Say Hello' song.  This is a beautiful little song using sign language.  Using sign language captures the attention of the babies and gradually over time they should start assosicating the sounds and movements together.  For now it is a gentle happy song to start the class.

The lovely Carmen then spoke about the development of the eyes and site in babies (which all links in with the theme Magic as later we work with bold colours and patterns).  It is said at 3-4 months babies usually are able to use both eyes and around 8-9 months unless baby has a sight inpediment they have 20/20 vision, which is the reason parents can see a leap in a babies development and maturity.  Plus a very interesting fact is babies love bold colours and patterns as they are easier to see and their favourite colour is Yellow as it is so bright hence the reason a lot of the props and toys have yellow in them at the class.  (Please note the dates are only approximate and not to use this blog as medical advise as I am not medically trained to advise anyone on baby development).

The next activity was wizard puppets.  Each mummy/daddy and nana had to hold a section of the large paracute low to the ground and Carmen walked around bobbing puppets on and off the sail in front of the babies.  The music for the classes work really well with each activity and differ each week depending on the theme.  The babies were fascinated with the puppet bouncing in front of them.  My baby smiled so much I think I am going to have to get one.  When the music ends thats the end of the activity so now we moved on to the next activity.  Ribbons and wands.

Lots of different coloured soft ribbons were spread out in the middle of the sensory class and babies were encouraged to lay wither on their back, tummy or sit (with support from parent) so they could see all the different ribbons.  I thought this was a genous exercise as the babies naturally wanted to touch the ribbons so encouraged them to use their hands.  Each adult was given a wand with long colourful ribbons hanging from it creating swirly, twisty movements.  My bubba didnt know where to look first...her eyes following the ribbons around followed by her holding on to them and not letting go.  I will be purchasing one to use at home.

We then moved on to playtime.  This is a short break allowing the babies to investigate the soft play area.  This week my baby loved the ball pit.  She was kicking and moving her arms and was so focused on all the colours around her.  Other toys included the magical tunnel, soft blocks and toys to encourage tunny tummy, soft magic books, play mats, magic castle with different colour materials, baby walkers and many many more your baby will most definately not get bored there are so many toys to choose from.  Plus this time allows the parents to meet each other and babies to start sharing.  It is gorgeous to see all the babies together having fun with big smiles on their faces.

Next we are called back to start part 2 of the class.  The middle of the class is layered  with black and white blankets some fleece some furry to add texture and on black and white foam puzzle board with bold patterns on them and a few balloons boucing around.  As I mentioned it was brought to our attention that babies can see bold patterns so this was a great excersie for them to grab their attention to look at the boards.  My baby was wide eyed during this activity and I could really tell she waas concentrating on the puzzle blocks.

Carmen then set up a puppet magic show with her trusty helpers (as it is the school holidays there were a few young ladies happy to help).  All the babies and parents were asked to sit around the mini stage where the puppets performed to their very own musicial.  The music is so wonderfully happy during these classes and creates such a positive, smiley atmosphere it is briliant.  The babies loved the puppets moving around and singing, petals being sprinkled over the white blanket so they could see the change in colours.  They were all sitting in font of the mini screen/stage enjoying the show...ever so cute!  To end the show we had the bubbles!! My baby loves the bubbles so much my mum went and bought a bubble machine haha.

The final activity was the Insy Winsy Spider Light Show.  All the babies were asked to lay on the mats and each parent was given a white pom pom with colourful lights in it.  The lights were turned out and the music starts and all the colourful pom poms are swishing around and all the babies are looking around, side to side looking at all the different lights and shapes they are creating.  It felt very magical and a wonderful way to end the class of Magic.

Don't worry we still had one last song of the class the beautiful Goodbye Song, this sweet, calming song again using sign is a lovely way to end the class and relaxes babies after their busy class.  I really like that every class starts and ends the same but each week the theme changes as well as the toys and activities.  I feel like I learn something new every week so I am almost certain the bubbas are too.

I look forward to the weekly class, it is perfect as it does not have to fit in with baby's daily routine as if you need to feed, change nappy, have a walk around to settle baby or even if baby falls asleep that is fine it is about educating yourself as well as baby and as I mentioned above even if you baby isnt watching you I am sure another one is so it is still worth joining in the class.  I highly recommend this to all mummies and it is also a lovely way to meet other mums in your area.

That's it for now.  Look out for next weeks review.  We joined the classes in Colcheter and you can contact the lovely Carmen above.  If you are not from Colchester they have classes all over the UK so find your nearest class here.
